Berlin-based insurance startup, Feather, has launched its Business Insurance offering, designed to help international companies access employee protection and enhance team benefits with a digital insurance interface free from bureaucracy and legacy systems. Having previously simplified and digitised the insurance process for individual expats, this move helps businesses with international employees overcome Europe’s outdated commercial insurance market.

Within a sleek, compliant platform, Feather Business Insurance delivers team coverage, including life insurance, health insurance and pension insurance for a company’s employees. Health insurance is a must-have for expat employees, while life insurance varies by country of residence. Pension insurance is often overlooked, but its inclusion in business insurance is a significant value driver, with pension products a worthy retirement savings tool for expat workers.

“Businesses in Europe, especially small and mid-sized ones, often struggle to offer substantial insurance benefits,” said Rob Schumacher, CEO and co-founder at Feather. “Their traditional insurance partners aren’t built to support them, especially in pension insurance, where too often international employees miss out on thousands of euros, locked into high-fee products. On the other hand, the commercial insurance experience for most professionals starts and ends with an annual letter. We’re retaliating against this experience.”

Built atop Feather’s B2C roots, the digital-first program enhances business protection and facilitates more comprehensive employment packages with tailored insurance that factors in the transient nature of roaming team members – a benefit that is especially important for attracting and retaining international workers.

“Feather is a no-brainer for companies where expats make up at least 10% of the workforce,” added Schumacher. “For HR teams, we’re alleviating headaches with a solution that overcomes historical barriers associated with multi-lingual paperwork and understanding complex, local insurance obligations. With a platform that transcends borders and languages – and offers insurance products tailored to the transient nature of expats – HR leaders can turn international onboarding into a warm welcome instead of a bureaucratic nightmare.”

Industry veteran Nicolai Schieffer is tasked with leading the company’s business expansion. As Head of B2B at Feather, Schieffer’s mission is to build strong relationships with HR departments and onboard them into a new way of working – one where the shortcomings of traditional insurance products are left behind, and employee insurance is tailored to the needs of the commercial and expat markets.

“Feather’s business launch is about solving relocation pain points upstream – at the employer level, where most insurance decisions are initiated,” said Scheiffer. “Having earned the trust of thousands of expats navigating the German, French, and Spanish insurance systems, this is a strategic evolution from our B2C roots.”

Feather’s business insurance solution also delivers professional liability, general liability and cybersecurity insurance products to organisations. Cyber insurance is a significant concern for European businesses, particularly those subject to the recent EU Cybersecurity Directive (NIS-2), which expanded the range of companies required to maintain stringent cyber risk controls. With tailored coverage for modern businesses, Feather is expanding beyond employee protection and helping its clients mitigate potential uninsured losses relating to cyber and other organisational risks.

Feather’s expansion into business insurance builds on recent strategic moves, including the appointments of Eloi Lanthiez and Jaime Sans Alvarez to oversee operations in France and Spain. These leadership additions support the company’s broader European growth plans, following a $6M funding round announced in 2024. Originally launched in Germany, Feather is now extending its reach across the continent, enabling expats and businesses to maintain consistent, reliable insurance coverage.
