Alexander Zanders is an entrepreneur and founder of UfarmX. In 2015, Zanders embarked on his agricultural journey, spending three years traveling across Africa attending conferences and learning about the value chain needs of the continent. Zanders recognized that people in the diaspora were looking towards Africa for solutions and saw an opportunity to use his skills to help improve the continent's agricultural sector. This experience led him to create UfarmX in 2019. In 2020, during the pandemic, Zanders built a 100-acre organic farm in Iseyin, Nigeria; successfully harvesting cassava, maize and soybean. In October 2023, UfarmX announced its expansion from Nigeria into Senegal through its strategic partnership with The SEED Project, an NGO founded by Basketball Africa League (BAL) President Amadou Gallo Fall. UfarmX and The SEED Project are offering 2,000 students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and education, while also providing a direct pathway to employment through UfarmX’s platform. This initiative is not only addressing immediate employment needs but is also contributing to long-term, sustainable change in the agricultural landscape of Senegal.

Introduction

Alexander, could you introduce yourself and tell us about your role as the CEO and founder of UfarmX? What inspired you to venture into the intersection of blockchain and agriculture?

I am originally from Baltimore, Maryland and serve as the visionary, founder and CEO of UfarmX. I have been in the ag space roughly since 2015, and prior to that the crypto space since 2012. Conceptually, UfarmX took shape in 2019, and transitioned into a practical operation, a 100 acre organic farm in Iseyin, Nigeria, during the COVID pandemic in 2020. After our first harvest I came to the realization that the local market was not receptive to paying a premium for organic goods. We ended up selling our organic produce at the same price as the local farmers that were utilizing chemicals. Determined to break the mold and champion an organic regenerative approach, I created an initiative to engage local farmers in the community surrounding our farm creating a larger market share. To foster these connections, we offered these farmers free seeds, introduced them to organic fertilizers such as rabbit urine, and provided guidance on the principles of organic farming for those unfamiliar with the concept. In total, we engaged nearly 600 farmers, while concurrently collecting extensive data on the farmers such as family size, ID, phone number, etc. (with no set goal but simply because in the Western world that’s what we do… collect data). From these interactions, I quickly realized that the challenges our company faced on ground were, more times than not, the same as these local smallholder farmers. From there with blockchain in my heart, we developed a digital platform that gave these farmers visibility, connected them directly to quality inputs needed to increase their production and guaranteed markets for offtaking.

Blockchain-powered Ecosystems

Could you provide an overview of how blockchain technology is utilised to create interconnected and transparent agricultural systems through UfarmX?

Our platform utilizes blockchain to create digital records of every farmer’s activities, transactions, and engagements. This decentralized ledger ensures data integrity and immutability, enhancing transparency and traceability throughout the agricultural value chain. This technology enables stakeholders, including farmers, to access secure and transparent information, fostering trust and accountability. The result is a connected ecosystem where participants can confidently engage in transactions, from input distribution to produce offtake, while contributing to the overall efficiency and integrity of the agricultural supply chain. With the goal being to eventually become the connector of all things agriculture to and from these often underserved and off the grid farmers in emerging markets.

Transformation of agriculture

How do you envision blockchain bringing significant changes and improvements to the agricultural sector, and what specific challenges does it address?

In my opinion, the potential for blockchain in agriculture is endless.

One significant challenge blockchain addresses is mitigating fraud and ensuring the authenticity of products. By having a tamper-proof record of each step in the production and distribution process, it becomes near impossible for bad actors to introduce counterfeit or substandard goods into the market.

Additionally, the decentralized nature of blockchain reduces dependency on intermediaries, cutting down delays and costs associated with traditional supply chain processes. This streamlined approach benefits farmers, suppliers, and consumers alike.

Supply chain transparency

Could you explain the role of blockchain in enhancing the visibility and accountability of supply chains within agriculture, and what benefits does this transparency offer?

Blockchain in agriculture enhances supply chain visibility and accountability by creating an immutable ledger that records every transaction and movement of agricultural products, providing a trustworthy and transparent history.

For example, in the Western world, swift recalls during outbreaks demonstrate effective traceability, preventing widespread health concerns. However, in emerging markets like Africa, disease outbreaks are catastrophic due to limited traceability. UfarmX’s blockchain utilization addresses this by allowing stakeholders to track and trace from seed to sale enabling proactive measures during outbreaks, streamlining recalls and fostering trust in the overall reliability of agricultural supply chains in emerging markets.

First-mile traceability

What are the key benefits of advanced first-mile traceability in agriculture, and how does it help monitor product origins and movements using blockchain?

Advanced first-mile traceability in agriculture is crucial for understanding the origin and production methods of the goods, ensuring quality control, regulatory compliance, and addressing issues such as contamination or fraud. By leveraging blockchain in agriculture, stakeholders are able to see data related to the production, harvesting, and initial processing of agricultural products. Once the information is added to the blockchain, it cannot be altered or tampered with ensuring it remains secure and verifiable.

This practice has become increasingly important in the agriculture industry as consumers and regulatory bodies demand more information about the sources and production practices behind the food and other agricultural products they purchase.

For example, blockchain can be used to store and verify certifications, such as organic or fair trade labels, at each step of the supply chain. This helps in ensuring the authenticity of the product’s claims, providing consumers with trustworthy information about the agricultural practices involved.

Formalising business practices

How does UfarmX contribute to implementing structured and standardised business practices for rural smallholder farmers to enhance their efficiency and productivity?

UfarmX implements structured and standardized business practices for rural smallholder farmers by leveraging technology and community engagement. Through our software application, we directly engage with each farmer while collecting valuable data, including precise GPS location and photographs. This data-driven approach allows us to identify on-the-ground challenges and tailor solutions to address specific production gaps, thereby enhancing efficiency and productivity.

Additionally, we provide advisory services, connect farmers with quality inputs, and ensure access to guaranteed markets for off-taking produce. Through blockchain technology, we create individualized digital portfolios for each farmer, autonomously providing recordkeeping to assist in formalizing their informal business practices. This structured approach not only fosters efficiency, transparency and traceability in the agricultural supply chain but also builds trust among farmers and external stakeholders. UfarmX’s ecosystem creates a pathway for farmers to become bankable, promoting financial inclusivity and sustainable growth in rural communities.

Can you elaborate on how UfarmX enables farmers to access critical resources, including AI-driven tools, to enhance their farming operations? What impact has this had on farmers?

This approach has led to a substantial increase in yields, with our farmers experiencing an average yield improvement of 300% in Senegal and Nigeria.

Our community of farmers boasts inspiring success stories, particularly through our mentorship programs in Senegal and Nigeria. Take our Nigeria pilot, for example, where 15 maize farmers transitioned to a hybrid variety, elevating their yield to approximately 12 tonnes per hectare. 1. Financial Inclusion: Through blockchain, UfarmX creates a pathway for smallholder farmers to become “bankable.” Farmers on the platform are given a credit profile based on their performance and engagement, providing them access to institutional finance.

2. Credit Management: Blockchain facilitates secure and transparent credit management. Farmers can receive inputs on credit and have their transactions recorded on the blockchain, creating a reliable and immutable credit history.

3. Market Access and Profit Sharing: Blockchain ensures transparency in the sale of produce. The profits generated are recorded on the blockchain and distributed among farmers, community leaders, and UfarmX, ensuring fair and traceable profit-sharing.

UfarmX is spearheading the transformation of modern agriculture by empowering smallholder farmers with essential tools, knowledge, and resources. Through direct engagement with over 1,300 farmers in Nigeria and Senegal we employ a personalized and data-driven approach to address on-the-ground challenges effectively.

Our commitment extends beyond data analysis; we utilize AI-driven solutions to craft customized farming input packages tailored to individual farmers. This, coupled with sustainable agriculture practices such as regenerative climate-smart farming, has yielded remarkable outcomes. Across our pilot programs, farmers experienced an astonishing 300% average increase in crop yields.

Furthermore, UfarmX is actively shaping the narrative around agriculture as a viable career path through strategic partnerships like The SEED Project.
